E-Alum Report June 2016

Last Chance to Register for ACES Family Academies

Registration has been extended to June 20, 2016 at NOON

Don't miss your last chance to register for ACES Family Academies program, July 7-8, 2016, on the College of ACES campus!  A few spots are left for our program this summer! 

Participants will enjoy the college experience living in a new residence hall, eating in the dining facilities and having a tailgate and participating in educational classes on the College of ACES campus. This program will give you an opportunity to relive and share your college days as well as create new memories with your little Illini.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to return to campus with your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews to share in this experience!

New features:

Ages have been extended for youth to age 13.

Registration Deadlines:

Registration has been extended to June 20, 2016 at NOON

Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

Cost:  $195.00 per person

Award of Merit Winners Recognzed

On April 11, 2016 the College of ACES Alumni Association recognized four outstanding alumni as the 2016 ACES Award of Merit winners who have made significant impact in their careers and their communities.

  • Donna R. Greene – B.S. ’75 Home Economics Education from Champaign, IL. 
    Donna is the Senior Managing Director and Executive Vice President of Busey Wealth Management, Inc.
  • Dr. Robert J. Gustafson – B.S. ’71 Ag Engineering, M.S. ’72 Ag Engineering from Worthington, OH. 
    Robert is the Retired Director of the Engineering Education Innovation Center & the Honda Professor for Engineering Education and Professor Emeritus, Food, Agricultural & Biological Engineering at Ohio State.
  • Scott McAdam – B.S. ’80 Horticulture from Lemont, IL.
    Scott is the President and Co-owner of McAdam Landscaping.
  • Jim R. Shearl – M.S. ’76 Extension Education from Loda, IL.
    Jim is the Director of Quality Assurance at Ag Reliant Genetics, LLC.

ACES in Places: Caterpillar a Success

A wonderful Illini evening was held on May 10, 2016 at the Caterpillar Visitors Center for an ACES in Places event in Peoria, IL.  Alumni toured the visitors center, tested their skills with CAT equipment and had an opportunity to network over dinner.  We were pleased to have the following join us for a program to share about their respective areas:

  • Gwenne Henricks, Vice President of Caterpillar Inc.
  • K.C. Ting, Department Head of Ag & Bio Engineering
  • Dean Robert Hauser, College of ACES Dean
  • Beth Laad, Site Director at the Caterpillar Data Innovation Lab in the Research Park

Holly Spangler, District 3 Director of the ACES Alumni Board of Directors hosted the event.

ACES Graduates Welcomed as Alumni at ACES Tassel Turn

Over 1500 ACES graduates and their families attended the ACES Tassel Turn Reception at Memorial Stadium's Colonnades Club on Sunday, May 15. The ACES Alumni Association along with the ACES administrators, faculty and staff congratulated graduates and welcomed them to the ACES Alumni Association!

Students had the opportunity to have a green screen photo taken to cherish this special day, receive their first ACES Alumni t-shirt and visit the memorial stadium columns. A cake and punch reception was also available.

ACES Student Advancment Committee Professional Development Trip

The College of ACES Student Advancement Committee (SAC) engaged with alumni during a trip to Springfield, IL on May 5, 2016.  Students met with legislators that were friends of the college and also ACES alumni including:  Don Moffitt (B.S. '69 ACES), Chapin Rose (B.A. '97 Law '00), John Sullivan, Adam Brown (B.S. '07 ACES) to learn about their roles in the Illinois legislature, why they chose this career path and what challenges they faced.  Students also met with lobbyists Bill Bodine (B.S. '96 ACES), Jake Butcher (B.S. '07 ACES) and Pamela Weber about their roles as lobbyists and challenges they face today with the budget crisis.  Lunch was hosted by the Farm Credit Illinois Sherman office and a panel of alumni speakers included Mindy Bunselmeyer (B.S. '95, M.S. '99 ACES), IL FFA Executive Director, Andrew Alton (B.S. '07 ACES), Farm Credit and Morgan Booth (B.S. '13 ACES), IL Pork Association.  The final stop was a tour of the FBI Springfield office with a presentaion on agri-terroism. 

Thank you to all of our outstanding ACES alumni and friends of the college that made this day possible for the SAC members!  It was truly and educational and fun day learning about careers, industry, politics and where an ACES degree can take you!

Salute to Ag Day Tailgate will kick off pre-game from 5:00 - 6:30p.m. sponsored by the College of ACES.

Save the Date for Agronomy Day

Join us on Thursday, August 18th for Agronomy Day! Discover the latest research, technology, and industry data from University of Illinois faculty and staff in the College of ACES. The event will be hosted in a new location: 4202 South First Street in Savoy, Illinois. In addition to a new location, we’ve made many improvements for participants including: disabled parking, shorter walking distances between tours, new faculty speakers, and a tour of SoyFACE. 

Field tours begin at 7 a.m. with presentations from researchers covering: nutrient management, drone demonstrations, farm economics, weed management, plant diseases, and more! Don’t miss new Illinois Athletic Director, Josh Whitman, speak during the noontime program! Outstanding Young Alumni – Due July 15, 2016. Each year the College of ACES Alumni Association honors up to three outstanding graduates of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement, or through outstanding leadership or service have significantly enhanced or improved the lives of others.

ACES Family Spirit Award – Due July 15, 2016. This award recognizes those family members who have demonstrated their support of the College as alumni and/or current students

UIAA to serve as new campus Welcome Center

Slated to open in 2017, a new Welcome Center, undertaken by the University of Illinois Alumni Association and located in the Alice Campbell Alumni Center, will not only provide a point of departure for exploring the Urbana-Champaign campus, but also help create a sense of community for all those who attended.
