James J. Albrecht

A native of Chicago, Dr. James Albrecht has served the food industry for more than 40 years, specifically 15 years with the McCormick & Company, James Albrecht retired in 1998 after a variety of general management positions for the company. Prior to his time at McCormick and Company, he worked in major corporations such as International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, and the Nestle Company. In addition to authoring papers on the subject of general areas of product development and flavor technology, Dr. Albrecht previously served on the Department of Food Science External Advisory Committee, is an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois, an Executive in Residence at the University of Baltimore and served as guest lecturer at Zamorano University. 

Dr. Albrecht holds a U.S. patent on a condiment composition and production method and is credited with the discovery of basic taste preparation mechanisms. He has developed unique systems for flavor enhancers, intermediate moisture herb products, and shelf-stable desserts and beverages.

Dr. Albrecht also serves as an active member of the Institute of Food Technologists and serves on a special task force for the Maryland Department of Economic Development. Furthermore, he has provided a generous gift in support of students from Zamorano to study in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

Professor Faye Dong and Assistant Director of Advancement, Marla Todd commented, “Because of his professional experiences, Dr. Albrecht appreciates that the food industry has global implications. Therefore, he has a strong interest in efforts to build greater understanding of international markets. It was this international passion, and appreciation for the University of Illinois and Zamorano University in Honduras that prompted Dr. Albrecht to establish the James J. Albrecht Fund to benefit an internship program for students from Zamorano to study in Food Science and Human Nutrition.”
